Dancing to Bowie at Sunset Beach

I'm sorry I've been a little MIA this week.  I've been down in Mexico working and getting ready for our honeymoon next week! 

I created this little piece of art down at the Ranch a couple of days ago for an art class by Erin Lee Gafill.  It's always so fun to take art classes because it reminds me of being a kid.  The particular piece goes along with a story I wrote in the beginning of the class about going through my parents records at our house by the beach in the early 80s.  We were living on Pierpont in Ventura which was awesome during that time (still is a beautiful place, but it had a certain magic then). 

My parents would play David Bowie (China Girl was my fav), Flock of Seagulls and Hall & Oats (I was also a big fan of Maneater) and I would dance around in the living room.  I was also kinda of obsessed with the album covers and looking through their collection. 

So anyhoo, I tried to recreate that feeling that I remember from that time.  I remember a lot light pinks, blues, yellows and purples, not just because it was the 80s, but also because we lived by the beach so we'd have the best sunsets.  Everything would glow down by the water.  Good memories.

I will be in Hawaii for two weeks, but I plan on blogging from there with lots of photos, mkay?  I'll be around in spirit :)  Some news, I know I mentioned this before, but I will be opening an Etsy store for a limited period of time to sell some of my art pieces before the holidays.  I don't have a date yet, although it will most likely be sometime in early December.  So stay tuned!  I will announce it on my newsletter first and then here on the blog. 

By the way, is it seriously November?  Am I really going on my honeymoon in two days?  I cannot believe how fast time is flying by.

Playing Pretend

Do you ever play pretend anymore?  I'm not really talking about playing house or pretending I'm a princess or anything, but more the sense of getting lost in what I'm doing.  Like when I was a kid, when I was in the zone, I was in the zone.  I wasn't worried about anything other than what I was doing at that moment, whether it was playing with my Barbies, listening to my Fisher Price record play or riding on my skateboard down the street.  Remember those days?

If you can, try to get that feeling back into what ever your likes or hobbies are today.  It's the best!  So fun.  I like to put on my music and just paint, just like I did back then.  I was obsessed with art and I lost it for a long time, but I'm happy to say, I think I'm getting it back.

K, guys, hope you're having a good start to your week!  Just as a little gift to you guys, here's a song that always puts a smile on my face and gets me in the mood to get creative.  Empire Ants by Gorillaz.  It's a couple years old so some of you may already know it, but, yeah, currently obsessed.  You'll see why ;)

The Creative Life

What is living the creative life?

Never being satisfied.

Constantly coming up with new ideas and jumping on them before they fade.

Working in your pajamas all day (not proud of this one).

Staying in instead of going out.

Constantly being inspired, but not too inspired that it takes over who "you" are.

Reading, watching, doing.

Dreaming. Literally.

Taking a break.

Realizing the multitude of amazing films, books, and music out there and learning from them.

GOING OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

Also realizing that a ton of people are doing this for a living and that you, yes I'm talking to you, can do the same.

Not giving up (so cliche, but so true).

At the same time, be aware if something isn't working and make adjustments.

Just get to it man!
